Huawei will launch a new 5G-compatible flagship smartphone on March 26"P40" seriesWas announced globally. It is a lineup of three models: the standard model "P40", the higher model "P40 Pro", and the highest model "P40 Pro +".
The announcement was an online live broadcast, so no hands-on sessions were held during regular presentations. Since I was able to try out the actual P40 Pro as soon as possible, I will introduce the appearance mainly as the first impression. The release in Japan is undecided at the time of announcement, but it is likely that any of the three models will be launched.
The P40 Pro is the middle model in the series, and will be the conventional modelP30 ProYou can think of it as a direct successor model to. The specifications of the P40 series are summarized in the table below. Announced in September 2019Mate 30 seriesSimilarly, the SoC "Kirin 990 5G" that integrates a 5G modem is adopted. With 8GB of RAM and 256GB of built-in storage, it's a high-end model.
Let's check the appearance of the main unit.
The main body size is 72.6 x 158.2 x 8.95mm as shown in the specification table. Because the display size is as large as 6.58 inches, it is a solid size feeling. Even when I actually held it in my hand, I felt that it was a bit tough to operate it with one hand even for a slightly larger writer. Still, all four sides have narrow frame specifications, so it's a reasonable size considering the display size.
The weight is over 209g and 200g. As expected, the impression is heavier, but it may be inevitable if you consider the body size. The actual weight was 207g [without SIM installed], slightly lighter than the nominal.
The display is a 1,58 x 2,640 dot display compatible 6.58 type organic EL display. Another major feature is that the display is curved in accordance with the side curves of the main body, with four narrow frames and four sides. The vertical curvature is small compared to the left and right, and it is a bit doubtful that it was necessary to be curved, but with this specification, almost from the front, it looks almost like a display area.
In the upper left of the display, there is a large punch hole with a front camera and a depth camera that realizes 3D face authentication and gesture operation, which is quite noticeable. The previous model had a relatively small teardrop-shaped cutout at the top of the display, but it is much more noticeable. I felt a little disappointed that this punch hole would be jammed when images and other images were displayed on the full screen.
The design is relatively simple, and the basic design concept has not changed significantly from the previous model. Five body colors are available, but the one we tried this time was "Silver Frost". The impression of the matte silver color has changed slightly compared to the conventional model, which had a strong gloss. The Silver Frost of the P40 Pro changes its gloss and color depending on how light hits it, and it also has a high-class feel. In addition, the fingerprint is less noticeable.
On the lower side, USB Type-C, SIM card slot, microphone, and speaker are arranged as interfaces, the infrared port and microphone are arranged on the upper side, and the volume button and power button are arranged on the right side. The SIM card slot is a type to install nano SIM on the front and back of the tray, and the SIM2 slot is compatible with Huawei's original memory card "NM card".
Huawei's P-series features powerful camera functions, but the P40 series' camera functions have evolved further from previous models.
The P40 Pro that I tried this time has a rear main camera configuration with a four-lens configuration: an ultra-wide-angle lens, a wide-angle lens, a 5x telephoto lens, and a depth measurement camera. The sensor has evolved, and the main wide-angle lens employs a large RYYB sensor with 50 megapixels and a 1.1.28 inch, improving image quality and shooting performance in dark places. The ultra-wide-angle lens uses a 40-megapixel sensor, and the 5x telephoto lens uses a 16-megapixel sensor to enhance image quality.
The following is the camera configuration of P40 Pro extracted from Huawei's global site. aperture stands for aperture, OIS stands for optical image stabilization.
- 50 MP Ultra Vision Camera [Wide Angle, f / 1.9 aperture, OIS]
- 40 MP Cine Camera [Ultra-Wide Angle, f / 1.8 aperture]
- 12 MP SuperSensing Telephoto Camera [f / 3.4 aperture, OIS]
- 3D Depth Sensing Camera
The rear camera unit is designed to surround the entire camera in a rectangular shape, such as the Galaxy S20 series and Pixel 4. The layout location is the upper left, as in the previous model, but the adoption of this design gives the impression that it will be followed up because it is late. However, the P series was originally a product featuring a camera, and this design, which has an enhanced camera presence, could be said to have been inevitable for the P series.
This time, I got a trial machine and did not have much time, so I introduced mainly the appearance. After a thorough touch, we plan to introduce the functional aspects of the camera.
