Can the toughness QWERTY smartphone "Titan" be a choice for BlackBerry people? -Engadget Japan Version

Engadget
Unihertz, who has sent ultra-small smartphones such as Jelly Pro and Atom to the world, announced Titan, a toughness smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard, and the project was started with Kickstarter at the end of July last year, in the hands of the writer who helped early Arrived at the end of December. There was a system update while I was trying to figure out what, and some of the things I was worried about were improved. I want to deliver a first impression impression.

Tough and heavy QWERTY smartphone

Engadget
The body size is 153.6 x 92.5 x 165.65mm, the weight is 303g, the display is 4.6 inches (1430 x 1438 pixels), the battery is 6000mAh and has a large capacity and supports wireless charging. CPU is 2GHz octa core, OS is Android9.0.

Although it has IP67 dust and water resistance and is a toughness specification suitable for outdoor with excellent shock resistance, 303 g is heavier than modern smartphones, and smiles without feeling the slickness when holding the box have done. Of course, it is "heavy" even if you have only the main body.

Engadget
In addition to the main unit, an AC adapter, USB Type-C cable, earphone, SIM take-out pin, glass for LCD protection, user guide, and warranty card are included. In addition, glass for LCD protection is kind specifications that are put on the body.

SIM slot is compatible with two nano size, SIM2 is used exclusively with microSD.
There are many compatible communication methods and bands, so they can be used conveniently overseas.

▲ VoLTE is also supported, and it was confirmed that the MVNO SIM that uses the docomo line at hand will become VoLTE.

▲ Example of the menu being translated into Japanese. Left before update, right after update

At first, there were many regrets such as English in the menu and description even in the Japanese environment, but in the system update (Titan_20191212_20200115-1457) Google security upgrade patch, some menus remained in English There were messages in Japanese, improvements and additions of bugs and functions.

Additional features include mini mode, Alt / Shift key swapping, programmable key as ctrl, FCC / CE / TELEC / JATE certification labels, and more. If you have or will get Titan, we recommend that you first check and apply the system update.

Engadget

The most personally appreciated point in this system update is "Addition of FCC / CE / TELEC / JATE certification label". The display on the skill must be legible. However, the label affixed to the back of the main unit did not seem to be water-resistant because it was easy to see. Even though it was a toughness specification, it could not be used in water. Now you can peel off the label and use it safely even in harsh environments.

Engadget
By default, Kika-Keyboard, Google Voice Input, GBoard added by the update, and sw9523-key are installed and set on the physical keyboard by default.

The keyboard, one of Titan's selling features a backlight with a 3-row QWERTY layout. Numbers and commonly used symbols can be entered by pressing the corresponding key after pressing the alt key. From the left, the Shift key, Menu key, Home button (also used as fingerprint sensor), Return key, and Alt key are at the top. The Shift key and Alt key can be swapped with "Smart Assist" in the settings.

Engadget
▲ Regarding the bookmark of the browser, the name is “Bookmark” regardless of which bookmark is set. It would be even better if it could be the name of the link or change the name.

You can register keyboard shortcuts in "Keyboard Shortcuts" of "Smart Assist". You can register two types of short press and long press for each key of the alphabet. It is a function only with a physical keyboard. The target of registration is a wide variety of applications installed on the main unit (it seems to be not all), direct call and message transmission from contacts, shortcuts such as browsers, so it is better to register commonly used applications etc. It seems to be useful.

Engadget

If you enable "Scroll Assist" in "Smart Assist", you can scroll the screen just by tracing up, down, left and right on the keyboard. There are restrictions on the environment and apps that can be used, and they are not always available, but when I actually used them in a browser or email, I felt that it was easier to do than touching the screen and scrolling.

Engadget
Any function can be set to the red button (shortcut key) on the left side of the main unit. You can also assign this shortcut key to the Ctrl key in the "Programmable Key" of "Smart Assist". When used as a shortcut key, a short-cut / long-press / double-click can be assigned a shortcut or a function to launch any application as a programmable key.

The screenshot assigned by the programmable key, the screenshot displayed by pressing and holding the power button, and the screenshot by the volume down key + power button are the same screenshot, but the specifications and operation seem to be slightly different.

In the screenshot with long press of the power button and the screenshot with volume down key + power button, everything displayed on the screen is saved. Also, the shutter sound always sounds regardless of the setting of “Screenshot” in “Smart Assist” and whether or not the sound is muted.

Engadget
On the other hand, screenshots assigned with programmable keys do not save messages displayed above the image. Is it an image that layers with different display layers are not saved? You can also choose how to take screenshots, such as scrolling and clips. The shutter sound seems to reflect the setting of "Screenshot" of "Smart Assist".

Engadget
Since the display of Titan is close to 1: 1, the size of the display was unnatural in Pokemon GO where I work every day, and sometimes it was displayed with the top and bottom cut off. Displaying at a different ratio than usual is strange and interesting, but a bit inconvenient.

Engadget
In such a case, by enabling mini mode, the screen changes to the familiar portrait portrait screen. There are two ways to switch between the menu displayed by pressing and holding the power button, and the method of swiping the screen from top to bottom with three fingers.

What is the camera performance?

Engadget
The camera has one 16MP (AF) rear and 8MP (FF) front. The camera has four shooting modes: rear, camera, image, professional, video, and time lapse. Front camera does not have a professional mode, and has three types: image, video, and time lapse.

Items that can be set when Pro mode is selected are ISO (100 to 1600), white balance (incandescent light, fluorescent light, warm fluorescent color, daylight, cloudy, twilight, shade), exposure (-2 to +2), I am. The white balance options are interesting.

The maximum size of a still image is 4672 x 3504 pixels with a rear camera of 16M (4: 3) and 3264 x 2448 pixels of a front camera of 8M (4: 3), but by default, the rear camera is 12M (1: 1) 3504 x 3504 pixels, front camera is set to 8M (1: 1) 2800 x 2800.

Engadget
Apart from these shooting modes, there is a mode called "Underwater Camera", which can be selected from the toolbox or quick setting. When this mode is selected, the operation on the touch panel is disabled, and use the left and right buttons to select the shooting mode and shoot. This function is intended for shooting underwater, but it can be used even when wearing gloves, even if it is not underwater.

Here are some examples. Titan's camera seemed to be closer than I expected, and food and flowers were too close to focus and I had to retake it several times.

The finish is light in color overall, and it feels good enough for daily recording and posting to SNS. I'm a bit unsatisfied with the writer who prefers a camera-oriented smartphone, but while using it, I can feel the atmosphere with a slightly faded taste like an old photo, and I started thinking that this is good is.

It is a QWERTY smartphone that is looking forward to future growth

Engadget
▲ Jelly Pro, Titan, BB9900 from the left. The size of the Titan stands out even more.

Overall, it seems that there is still room for improvement in each function, but now a smartphone with a physical keyboard that has become a rare and kinky category and a toughness specification is scheduled to be sold at a price of $ 259 (about 28,500 yen) Thankfully, the Kickstarter Special, which I supported, is available for $ 239 (about 26,500 yen).

Since Titan is wide, it is difficult for small writers to hold it and it is often difficult to hit, but as a body that is still poor at flick input and displaying the QWERTY keyboard and popping, the physical keyboard is more convenient and sentences Input will speed up.

Unihertz will continue to optimize and respond to feedback from users, which is a positive feeling for the sincere interaction with users. We hope to see future updates and the next product.
