Canon "RF24-70mm F2.8L" review

Canon announced the development of six interchangeable lenses for RF mounts at the launch of the full-size mirrorless “EOS RP” in February 2019, and announced that all will be released within 2019. If the "RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS" scheduled to be released at the end of December appears on schedule, all six lenses will be released within the year as predicted. From these six interchangeable lenses, I would like to check the ability of the standard large-diameter standard zoom lens “RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM” again.

    Let's check the ability of the standard zoom lens “RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM” which is the main product of “Big Three-way Zoom”. The actual sales price at a camera mass retailer is around 300,000 yen including tax [reduction of 10% points], which is quite a price.

The Canon RF mount used in the EOS R series is surprisingly available in three types of standard zoom lenses. “ RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM '' familiar as a kit lens, “ RF28-70mm F2 L USM '' boasting unprecedented open F2 optical performance, and “ RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS '' that appeared this time USM ”. In particular, the RF24-70mm F2.8 L is a spec that can be said to be a “standard” with 24-70mm and open F2.8 through, so there may have been many users waiting.

The lens design has changed, and the optical design has been renewed from the “EF24-70mm F2.8L II USM” for SLR cameras. I think that the lens will be lighter because it is mirrorless, but the RF24-70mm F2.8 L weighs about 900g, which is about 100g more than the EF mount version of about 805g. However, since the camera itself is light [this time using EOS R], it actually feels lighter than a full-size SLR camera and a lens with the same spec. The open F2 through RF28-70mm F2 L weighs about 1430g and the filter diameter is 95mm, which isn't easy to carry around, but I feel that this lens can be used regularly.

An improvement over the EF mount version is that it is finally equipped with an in-lens image stabilization mechanism. Compared to single-lens reflex cameras, where a large mirror is driven when the shutter is released, mirrorless features less impact and less blurring. Nonetheless, with the high-quality EOS R / RP, even slight blurring can lead to a reduction in resolution. The fact that it is fully equipped with an image stabilization mechanism can be greatly appreciated. The effect of camera shake correction is also complaining that the shutter speed is 5 steps. The shortest shooting distance, which was 38cm in the EF mount version, has also been shortened to about 21cm.

The essential performance of the image is incredible, and you can revolve even if you look through the viewfinder and look at the images you have taken. The in-focus area demonstrates high resolution from the full aperture. From there, I gently blurd back and forth, and I felt that the three-dimensional appearance and texture reproduction were appropriate for the latest lens. I tried the harsh conditions of backlighting, but the backlighting resistance is quite high.

For EOS R / RP users and those who are planning to purchase, it may be annoying which one should buy RF24-105mm F4 L. The answer varies depending on the shooting genre, the equipment on hand, the budget, etc., but considering that the aperture is one step brighter and the shortest shooting distance is short in terms of expression width [RF24-105mm F4 L is about 45cm, RF24-70mm [F2.8 L is about 21cm]

  • The focus will be out of focus smoothly. There is no habit in both front and rear blur, and it has a soft impression [using EOS R, 70mm, ISO100, 1/200 seconds, F2.8]

  • When you look at the petals of the rose, you can see that the lines are thin and very delicate. Although it was shot in the shade with poor light, the color was also vivid and clear [70mm, ISO160, 1/30 seconds, F2.8]

  • The scene is harsh on the lens with strong backlight. Depending on the angle, a slight ghost appears, but the contrast remains firm. Slow light resistance [uses EOS R, 48mm, ISO250, 1/800 sec, F8]

  • I think that this lens shows its true value when you want to reproduce such a texture beautifully [using EOS R, 70mm, ISO250, 1/160 seconds, F2.8].

  • With such a bright lens, it is common to see vignetting that distorts the blur around the rugby ball, but this lens also draws a perfect circle around the lens. It can be seen that advanced optical design has been made [using EOS R, 57mm, ISO320, 1/40 second, F2.8]

  • Although it is sharp when the aperture is set to F2.8, it gives a slightly soft tone. However, if you squeeze a little, the edges will stand up and the description will be sharp. It can be said that it is a fun lens to squeeze in [using EOS R, 48mm, ISO320, 1/640 second, F5.6]

  • A snapshot taken while waiting for a signal. The sun is reflected in the screen, but this depiction is wonderful. Good bokeh is also alive [EOS R use, 24mm, ISO320, 1/125 seconds, F2.8]

  • In urban snaps, you often encounter such extremely high contrast scenes. Of course, the performance of the camera is also important, but in order for the highlights and shadows to stick well, the descriptive power of the lens is also necessary. Of course, it can be said that the rendering performance of this lens is in a very high level [using EOS R, 27mm, ISO500, 1/400 seconds, F8].
