Casio dermo camera changes the dermatological medical field-Report of the 118th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Dermatological Association

The 118th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Dermatological Society was held at the Nagoya Congress Center for four days from June 6th to 9th. At this general meeting, Casio was jointly developed with dermatologists and attracted a great deal of attention from dermatologists, such as a seminar on the newly launched Dermo camera.

  • Casio Dermo Camera “DZ-D100” booth

In this article, we will report on the luncheon seminar and the display booth of the dermo camera, etc., but prior to that we interviewed Dr. Masaru Tanaka of the Tokyo Women's Medical University East Medical Center who introduced dermoscopy medical treatment early in the country and worked on dissemination activities. He told me about the significance of DZ-D100 release.

  • Dr. Masaru Tanaka of Tokyo Women's Medical University Medical Center East

DZ-D100 is the key to AI diagnostic research

-Prof. Tanaka also appreciated the prototype, but how did you feel when you finally saw the finished product released?

Mr. Tanaka:“It was easy to hold and light, and the color was white, so it was easy to get in touch with, and it seemed to be easy for women to use. Yes, there are many female dermatologists, so this design is correct.

I think it would be good for doctors around the world to use this camera as a standard, as doctors become so popular that they have one by one.

  • The actual machine of DZ-D100 just released

――I have a little greedy impression, but do you rate it as highly complete?

Mr. Tanaka:“Of course, there are, but it is meaningful that it can be used for learning AI diagnosis because it is made with everything from image capture to management methods. The more images used for AI diagnosis, the better. However, on the other hand, images with complete shooting conditions such as brightness are overwhelmingly easier to use.

In theory, it is most efficient for doctors around the world to shoot dermoscopy images with the same camera. Currently, this camera is the best for taking dermoscopy images, so I want it to become popular. ''

-What are the benefits of advances in AI diagnosis?

Mr. Tanaka:“AI diagnosis may be good or bad depending on the disease. However, even if the disease is good at diagnosis, no matter how much it progresses, it will not be 100% correct. It's just a matter of probing what the pathology is in front of you, so it's important that the doctor sees it and decides it, so you don't need a doctor.

Of course, doctors can make 100% correct diagnosis. Rather, you should say you don't know what the doctor doesn't understand. When a small mole is formed, no one knows if it is benign or malignant. As it grows, it becomes easier to understand and becomes clearer as it goes on. If the doctor has all the options of removing the lesion at an unknown stage, the patient's body will be full of holes. It is better to wait where you can wait. AI diagnosis contributes to shortening the waiting time to follow the progress. It will be easier to prevent the disease from being overlooked. ''

――The more case data taken with the DZ-D100, the more accurate AI diagnosis will be.

Mr. Tanaka:“Yes, the skin is visible and easy to follow, and is suitable for AI research. The internal organs are not visible as they are. The future will be a whole body over time using a device like MRI in a human dock. There may be a day to shoot, which will allow you to create a stereoscopic image of the whole body lesion, see what changes have occurred every six months or every year, and find skin cancer faster and more accurately. You will be able to find it.

But even so far, the scalp covered in the ears and hair is not reflected. This field is still in the future. I expect the DZ-D100 as a tool to advance AI research. ''

–Thank you.

DZ-D100 developed based on medical needs

The luncheon seminar on dermocamera was held with the title "About dermoscopy imaging for AI diagnosis support". Prof. Tanaka was the facilitator as chairman, and Prof. Hachikawa Tokawa from Chiba University and Prof. Hiroshi Koga from Shinshu University were in turn. The venue is filled with a large number of listeners, and it seems that dermatologists are highly interested.

  • Luncheon seminar with many attendees

Prof. Tokawa, who gave the first presentation, was titled “New Dermoscopy Medical Treatment Using Dermo Camera”, and the DZ-D100 can be used for simple dermoscopy medical care, which can be performed with simple operations. I made a speech.

  • Prof. Hachihide Tokawa of Chiba University who cooperated in the development of DZ-D100

Dr. Tokawa unraveles why dermoscopy seems to be troublesome in the first place. Prof. Tokawa points out that if you look at the tumor with a dermoscope, you will not be able to understand it, it will take time to shoot dermoscopy in addition to clinical photographs, or you will want to bring several cameras for your visit There are no images, and the number of images increases, and the effort of organizing becomes a burden.

So I want a camera for dermoscopy! I thought there were six items that I told Casio three and a half years ago. It can "take clinical photographs (together)" "can take dermo images of the entire lesion" "polarized and non-polarized light can be taken with one button" "focus is perfect" "and compact and light" "fly photos with wireless LAN function It was said.

It was the DZ-D100, which was born on May 27th, to realize these six major requirements. Dr. Tokawa says that he likes it so much that he personally calls it “Ninja”.

With the DZ-D100, you can take clinical photographs, and in addition to taking polarized and unpolarized light with a single button, you can also take purple light (UV) images simultaneously with polarized and unpolarized light. The purple light image reflects the pigmentation caused by melanin in the epidermis. When the subject's lesion is a melanoma called a mole cancer, the margin is slightly clearer and easier to distinguish.

  • A single DZ-D100 can shoot both clinical photographs and close-ups, and with close-ups, you can shoot polarized, unpolarized, and purple light with a single button.

Shiny white lines are seen as artifacts (noise) during polarized photography, and this finding appears and disappears when switching between polarized and unpolarized light. The phenomenon is called Blink sign. The DZ-D100 can also shoot moving images, and can switch between polarized and non-polarized light during movie shooting. In other words, Blink sign can be found in the video.

In addition, Prof. Tokawa stated that the DZ-D100 can also shoot movies for the Wobble test.

  • Blink sign can be found in DZ-D100 video shooting

In addition, Prof. Tokawa reported that the DZ-D100 was able to shoot lesions without distortion and how much depth of field there was, and reported that it achieved superior levels compared to other companies' cameras. He also mentioned that there was no irradiation unevenness or color blur, strong imaging of uneven lesions and blood vessel findings, and that it was very suitable for AI diagnosis.

In addition, DZ-D100 can be used for non-jelly diagnosis of scabies at home visits, etc., and a live image can be displayed on a large monitor with an HDMI output terminal and viewed as a magnified image close to 100 times. He said that he could use it effectively in the scene.

  • Projected images can be displayed directly on the large screen of a monitor or projector via HDMI

Image management tool with abundant functions unique to healthcare professionals

Next, Prof. Koga climbed the stage and gave a lecture entitled "Dermoscopy image management technique for the age of diagnostic support". Focusing on how to manage dermoscopy images taken with the DZ-D100, he introduced that software “D'z IMAGE Viewer” developed with Casio can be managed safely and efficiently with simple operations.

The D'z IMAGE Viewer is available free of charge from the “Instruction Manual / Software Download” on the support page of Casio's “D'z IMAGE STORE”.

  • Professor Koga from Shinshu University mainly cooperated in software development

Prof. Koga first reported that he passed the AI (Artificial Intelligence) G test as a personal event. In the future, when considering the development of a medical image diagnosis support system using AI technology, the data source, imaging parameters at the time of acquisition, types of associated clinical data, and benign / malignant discrimination will be used for learning data and validation data. Expertise pointed out that there are a number of things that must be clearly stated, such as annotations that include results and the use of data other than clinical image data.

In research that uses AI for dermoscopy, management of captured images is extremely important. However, if the management becomes complicated, it will be difficult to obtain medical cooperation.

Therefore, D'z IMAGE Viewer, jointly developed by Prof. Koga and Casio, is designed to be used sensuously without emphasizing the operating procedures as much as possible, with emphasis on reducing the burden on the medical site.

For example, D'z IMAGE Viewer can link to DZ-D100 via wireless LAN and automatically transfer to a PC without having to connect cables or insert / remove media after shooting. The patient ID can be set with up to 10 single-byte numbers when shooting, and images taken by entering the patient ID are automatically sorted by patient ID, eliminating the need for cumbersome folder division .

One of the functions that makes it easy to see that D'z IMAGE Viewer is made for healthcare professionals is an image comparison function. This is a comparison of photos of different lesions taken on the same patient date. It is very useful for diagnosis because it is obvious how the lesion has changed.

Also, the task of examining whether there is a change in the mole on the back of the back is not easy without a record of the photo, but it is not immediately obvious if you compare the photo with the past and the present. D'z IMAGE Viewer has a function that automatically enlarges the other image at the same magnification when one image is enlarged when multiple images are selected and displayed. It's easy to find out if a new mole has been made.

  • Example of checking for changes in moles on the back

  • Enlarging one image automatically enlarges the other at the same magnification

As with the DZ-D100 LCD screen, a scale can be displayed on the image taken by close-up, and the size of the lesion can be easily confirmed. It also has a measure function that measures the distance between two points, and can measure and display the major axis and minor axis of the required part.

In addition, a print function that can be used for a request for examination from another doctor or a letter of introduction is also included as a medical function. Data such as shooting date, site, disease name, and findings can be printed on A4 paper size from a dermoscopy image in one shot.

In some cases, such as when used for research papers, the patient's personal information can get in the way. With D'z IMAGE Viewer, you can delete the information and save the image with a different name.

Help is also enriched, so you can quickly refer to the operation procedure if you want to archive image data in zip format, save it in a specified folder, print it, or backup / restore it.

Lastly, Koga-sensei said, “Because it is free, please feel free to touch it. In that case, instead of reading tens of thousands of data at a time and trying it, it is better to practice with about 100 images that can be erased first. “The trick is to organize the folders for each ID before importing them,” he said.

Exhibition corner attracting high attention from medical professionals

At the General Meeting of Dermatological Association, there will be an exhibition corner of sponsoring companies every time, but at the Casio booth where DZ-D100 was exhibited, it was more crowded than usual.

At the booth, the actual machine of the DZ-D100 that was just released was on display, and a personal computer running the D'z IMAGE Viewer and a display for displaying the dermoscopy learning site “D'z IMAGE” were also placed.

  • Casio booth

The adapter “DMS-100M”, which was not yet released at the time of the conference, was also on display. This is just released the other day, and the price is 79,800 yen. The adapter was prepared at the request of a doctor who touched the prototype.

  • When the microscope adapter “DMS-100M” is attached and connected to the microscope

  • Sample screen of case database of dermoscopy study site “D'z IMAGE”

  • Many visitors and companions

For details on DZ-D100, please refer to Casio's D'z IMAGE website and MyNavi News back number. There is also a secret story about development, which should provide interesting information.

Dermoscopy dojo where you can train your diagnostic skills

We will also touch on the state of the annual practical training course “Dermoscopy Dojo”. The Dermoscopy Dojo is a program that allows students to learn how to see the color and shape of lesions when viewed through a dermoscope. The Dermoscopy Dojo is intended to improve diagnostic techniques in participants' clinical practice.

Specifically, a mini-lecture will be held with Dr. Tokawa and Dr. Koga as chairs at the luncheon seminar. Then, using a personal computer with all participants, display dermoscopy images and train yourself in diagnostic training.

The previous record of academic society-certified specialist system 2 units and the previous record of mechanism-certified specialist system (new system) 1 unit may be permitted, and late arrivals, withdrawals from the day, and observation visits are not permitted. The frame soon filled and participants were learning with serious expressions.

  • Dermoscopy Dojo where a large number of students gather every time

  • One of the problems of dermoscopy dojo. Answer your findings with a choice formula

  • It's not an exam, so you can learn while asking questions from tutor teachers

The DZ-D100 is a collection of the best camera technologies that Casio has cultivated so far. The degree of interest of doctors has been very high since the exhibition booth was very successful. However, it is important to keep an eye on how the DZ-D100, which should continue to be improved, will be involved in the medical field.
