On October 26th and 27th, a cosplay event “Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival 2019” [Ike Haro] was held in the Higashi-Ikebukuro area of Toshima-ku, Tokyo. It was a big event that attracted 100,000 visitors every year, including famous cosplayers, and the whole area was covered with great enthusiasm.
Among them, there was a corner where many people with their favorite cameras gathered. This is the “Gachi Shooting Area” opened by Canon Marketing Japan. By borrowing Canon's latest full-size mirrorless and high-quality lenses free of charge, you can shoot popular cosplayers for free, so there was an early waiting queue in the reception tent.
The model cosplayers are Uramaru-san, Thistle-san, Akira Itsuki-san, Aki Miyamoto-san, Firefighter Rosiel-san and Kuroneko-san. Have you ever heard of your name even if you are not a cosplayer? Only popular layers that are well known.
The Gachi shooting area will be the third time this year, but for the first time we wanted females to participate, this time for the first time male cosplayers Momoki, Hayatin, NaGi, Kota Kobayashi, Billy appeared. Cosplay shoots are often images of men, but many female participants were also seen.
The company's full-size mirrorless high-end model “EOS R” was lent out in the shooting experience. It boasts 30.3 million effective pixels and a continuous shooting speed of 8 frames per second. Eye AF, which is convenient for taking pictures of people, is installed, but the accuracy of Pupil AF has been improved with the new firmware released on September 26. Pupil AF works even when the face is small on the screen. It can be said that the merits are particularly great for cosplay photography, which often takes the entire body.
The lineup of rental lenses is more luxurious than the camera body. Not only the standard zoom lens “ RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM '', which is also a kit lens, but also the wide-angle zoom lens “ RF15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM '', and the large-diameter single focus lens “ RF85mm '' longed by Canon users "F1.2 L USM" and "RF50mm F1.2 L USM" are available. Participants are free to choose one of these. According to the venue staff, there were many participants who requested 85mm, also called portrait lenses.
This time, it was “enclosed shooting” where the cosplayers were shot with around 20 participants, and the time was set to 10 minutes longer. About half of the people who borrowed EOS R at the venue and brought their favorite camera. There were no restrictions on the number of manufacturers and the number of cameras that could be brought in, and the strobes could be used.
Ease of focusing even with an open aperture of F1.2
I also borrowed EOS R and tried to shoot. Two lenses, RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM and RF85mm F1.2 L USM, were used.
The 85mm f / 1.2 of RF, which was the first lens I used, and I was interested in describing. I took the picture with the aperture wide open because it was F1.2. Even with an open aperture, the crisp depiction of each eyelash is an impression of the latest high-quality lens. The bokeh of the background is also beautiful, and I thought it was a perfect choice for cosplay photography. The 24-105mm F4 has a long and proven focal length even with a single-lens reflex camera, and I felt that there was a high degree of freedom in composition. Of course, descriptive power is perfect.
This time, 4 sets [5 people] were filmed from the cosplayers who appeared on the first day of the exhibition. First, Uramaru-san [@uramaru_y]is.
Next, Aya Miyamoto [@saki_miyamoto]is.
Furthermore, thistle [@ Sithle011]is.
This time, both were set to Servo AF and shot using Pupil AF. In this way, I always kept my eyes in focus, so it was a great help to focus on the composition. Since EOS R is equipped with a vari-angle LCD, there were scenes where it was easier to shoot using the back LCD when shooting at low or high angles.
This time it was “ considering the balance with the lens '', the body was rented only for EOS R, but the small and lightweight model “ EOS RP '' is also subject to firmware update for pupil AF enhancement like EOS R It has become. EOS RP is also equipped with a vari-angle LCD, which is relatively inexpensive as a full-size machine. If you want to make a cosplay photo debut, you may want to consider this.
