Jaguar E type that many designers were jealous 1

Innovative cars born from racing

The Jaguar E type was a sensational birth at the Geneva Show in March 1961, and is still a masterpiece as a sports car that represents the late 20th century. However, if you read the book, pure racing sports developed as successors to the C and D types that were very active in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1950s, evolved from two prototypes called “ E1A '' and “ E2A '' It has a strange background in that it has been turned into a commercial sports car during the course of development.

For this reason, Malcolm Sayer, who worked on the advanced chassis structure of monocoque + subframe and aerodynamic specialist who was originally active at the aircraft manufacturer Bristol Aircraft Company, and also worked on C type and D type after transferring to Jaguar, was in charge of The aerodynamic body design was also developed from the D type.

The body model of the production model is an open model that integrates a roadster of the XK150 era equivalent to the predecessor model and a drop head coupe. At present, it was considered to be a two-seat type, an open two-seater [so-called OTS] that is often described as a roadster, and a coupe with a characteristic side-opening hatch gate.

The power unit also follows the D-type flow. The great thing about the Jaguar, however, is that the XK150 series or the mass-produced engine XK-type in-line 6-cylinder DOHC unit, which was also used in the Mark 2 saloon, was powered up and mounted on the D-type. Therefore, in effect, the power of the high-performance 3.8S engine of the XK150 was added by about 15ps and carried over.

The E-type was born with a naming that emphasized the continuity from the D-type, but it was the successor to the XK150, which had already gained high popularity in the United States, which was the world's largest sports car market from that time. It was called "XK-E" to show off something. And Charlton Heston, coupled with the style that made Enzo Ferrari said to be “ the most beautiful '' in the world, advanced design, reasonable price equivalent to about half of the contemporary Aston Martin DB4, etc. Celebrities such as Dean Martin, Steve McQueen, and others have become so explosively popular as to sign the XK-E order form.

The E-type will gradually change its specifications to meet the demands of the North American market. First, in October 1964, the XK engine was expanded to 4235cc. At the same time, the 4-speed gearbox was also fully synchronized. In 1966, a 2 + 2 coupe with an additional 230mm rear wheel base and additional occasional seats was added. The headlights on the exterior have been repositioned since 1968 to meet the new security standards of the North American authorities. A transitional model with a few safety measures in the interior, also known as the "Series 1.5 new version, will be produced only for a short period of time.

In October of the following year, in October 1968, the design of front and rear bumpers and auxiliary lights was drastically changed for safety measures newly required by the North American market, and a baton touch was applied to the "Series 2" with crash pads stuck inside the room. Then, three years later, in October 1971, the transition to the final evolution "Series 3" equipped with a V-type 12-cylinder 5.3L engine was made.
