Samsung sells 74% of 5G smartphones sold in the U.S. in 2019

According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung's Galaxy Note 10+ 5G was the best-selling 5G smartphone in the United States in 2019. Counterpoint estimates that less than 2 million 5G smartphones were sold in the United States in 2019, accounting for 1% of all smartphones. Samsung accounts for 74% of 5G smartphone sales, followed by LG and OnePlus.

"In the United States, sales of 5G smartphones in 2019 were below expectations for several reasons," said Jeff Fieldhack, Director of Counterpoint Research, in a March 3 press release. He mainly cited the limited 5G service area.

5G promises to dramatically improve speed, coverage, and the response speed of mobile networks, but these promises remain largely unfulfilled at this time. The service area is sparse and limited to only a few cities, and compatible models are limited. Samsung is one of the few companies to launch multiple 5G smartphones in 2019.

PointCounterpoint predicts that sales of 5G smartphones will increase significantly in 2020. In addition to expanding the 5G service area, it has been rumored that Apple will launch a 5G-compatible iPhone. Fieldhack said he expects 5G devices to account for 5% of smartphone sales in the US from current 1% to around 25% by 2020.

On the other hand, he pointed out that the expansion of the new coronavirus infection [COVID-19] is likely to negatively affect the entire smartphone market.
