Xiaomi latest smart band "Mi Band 5" review. Enhancing healthcare functions to make more serious progress-Engadget Japan

Xiaomi (Xiaomi: Xiaomi), a general home appliance manufacturer in China, has steadily increased its users after entering the Japanese market. Similar to last year, this year, the new smart band Mi Band 5 was announced on June 11, and it was released on June 18 in China. I made a reservation right after the announcement and managed to get the initial lot. There was no problem with transportation, and I arrived at the store on June 23.

▲Reserved at the Xiaomi online shop at the same time as the announcement. Like last year, the initial lot belt is black only. The price is about 2900 yen. It's still difficult to obtain now, and it seems that it is sold out soon even if a small amount arrives.
▲ The package size is the same as Mi Band 3 and 4. The tone of the box is now one color. Until now, the color of the box has changed according to the color of the band, but I do not yet know what will happen in the case of 5.

Exactly one year since Mi Band 4 was announced. It seems to have sold well all over the world,According to a US IDC surveyThe global wearable device market share in the first quarter of 2020 is 14.0%. We have increased our share compared to last year, and we are also in second place in the ranking. By the way, Xiaomi reportedly shipped 7.3 million wristband type devices last year.

Smartly improved charging style!

By the way, the Mi Band 5 is the same size as the Mi Band 4, but the size of the body is slightly larger. In addition, the display is about 20% larger from 0.95 inches to 1.1 inches, and the resolution is increased from 120 × 240 pixels to 124 × 294 pixels. Adopting full-color AMOLED is the same as Mi Band 4.

▲ Mi Band 4 (left) and Mi Band 5 (right) core units. Mi Band 5 is slightly wider. You can see that the display area is obviously larger.
▲The back side of the core unit of Mi Band 4 (left) and Mi Band 5 (right). For some reason it is easy to see the difference in size on the back side. The heart rate sensor is in the center. There is a charging terminal at the bottom.
▲ Difference between Mi Band 5 (left) and Mi Band 4 (right). All materials are TPU, but Mi Band 5 is slightly softer and more supple.
▲The feeling of wearing is not so different from the conventional one. The brightness of the display has increased slightly, but it remains difficult to see outdoors in fine weather. The finger coating is very good, probably because the display surface coating has improved.

Like the conventional model, Mi Band 5 is also composed of 2 pieces, a core unit and a band. Charging, which until now could not be done without removing the core unit, has been changed to a dedicated connector that connects with a magnet, and can now be done without removing it from the band. This charger is for Mi Band 5 only. By the way, the waterproof level is the same as the Mi Band 3 or later models, 5 atm (equivalent to a water depth of 50 m).

▲The charger has changed from the holder type to the magnet type. You can now easily charge without removing the core unit from the band. There is no need to worry that the band will stretch and become loose due to frequent core unit removals.

The core unit is black only, but the belt is available in all eight colors. However, immediately after the release, only black can be selected. Color packages will be available if the supply is stable. The belt has 13 adjustment holes according to the thickness of the wrist, and is vacant at a 5 mm pitch. The material is TPU, which is water resistant and can be washed completely even if it becomes dirty.

The belt, which was shared between Mi Band 3 and Mi Band 4, became special for Mi Band 5 due to the increased size of the core unit, and the shape changed slightly. You can attach it to the Mi Band 4 belt with a little effort, but the seams will be slightly different.

Accurate measurement of heart rate and accurate measurement during various exercises

The Mi Band 5 heart rate sensor is equipped with the same photoelectric volume pulse (PPG) type as Mi Band 4. The data sampling algorithm has been improved, especially for improved monitoring accuracy. By the way, it is said that the accuracy of monitoring/detection during abnormal heartbeat is improved by about 50%, and the accuracy of detection during awakening/sleep is improved by about 40%. By improving the heartbeat analysis algorithm, accurate measurement is possible even during various sports. Therefore, a rowing machine, yoga, and skipping rope have been added to the standard sports items, increasing the total to 11 types.

▲Standard supported training menu. From top left rowing machine / cross trainer / yoga / outdoor jogging / outdoor bicycle / swimming / indoor bicycle / skipping rope / treadmill / walking / freestyle training.

The built-in 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyro have the same measurement accuracy as Mi Band 4, but the improvement in the built-in software, like the heartbeat, has reduced the measurement error of the pedometer considerably. In Mi Band 4, if you used multiple walks, trains, or bicycles when moving, the pedometer might not be counted correctly, but in Mi Band 5, they were improved.

In terms of hardware, there is not much change other than the charging mechanism, but Mi Band 5 is also paying attention to healthcare that makes full use of heartbeat data. From the heartbeat data that is constantly monitored 24 hours a day, not only abnormal heart conditions, but also exercise, sleep and stress levels can be quantified.

▲The heart rate monitor operates 24 hours a day, but it can also be measured manually. By scrolling, you can check the heart condition and how much load has been applied so far. The data is for one day and is reset every day at midnight. Past data can be confirmed on the smartphone side.
▲ A newly added stress level meter. It is analyzed during heart rate measurement and expressed as a number from 1 to 100. It starts from 0:00 and displays the stress content up to that point. A deep breathing guide has also been added for times of high stress. They will guide you from 1 to 5 minutes.

In Mi Band 5, the PAI (Personal Activity Intelligence) function that combines the heart rate data with other sensors and gyro data to digitize the physical activity state, monitors the exercise status and advises the exercise intensity is added and registered in advance. It displays the optimal exercise index according to age/gender/height/weight.

In addition, we have added support for the menstrual cycle for women, and by combining it with PAI, it is possible to provide appropriate health care according to the physical condition. With the addition of these functions, the number of items has increased compared to Mi Band 4, but the displayed contents can be changed according to your lifestyle, so the simplicity is the same as before.

Dedicated app already supports Mi Band 5

For the settings and management of Mi Band 5, and the utilization of data, use the dedicated genuine application “Mi Fit” as before. If you have been using Mi Band series up to now, you can transfer recorded data and measurement settings to Mi Band 5 as is. All you have to do is to newly pair Mi Band 5 from Mi Fit during setup. The current version 4.2.1 already supports Mi Band 5 and can be used in all Japanese.

▲ Mi Fit is fully Japanese, so you can fully use all the features. In the latest version, it also supports Mi Band 5, so just pair it. Pairing with multiple bands is possible, but only one can be used.

When combined with the Mi Fit app, various data collected by Mi Band 5 can be confirmed on the wide screen of the smartphone. You can also browse past data. Since it will be possible to link with healthcare on iOS and Google FIt on Android, the range of data utilization will be expanded.

▲ Utilizing the wide screen, it visualizes your heartbeat in 24 hours, so you can check your heartbeat changes and load throughout the day.
▲The stress level is also displayed for 24 hours. That's certainly true because I feel relaxed when I'm sleeping and the stress load is high when I'm busy with work…
▲ REM sleep has been added to the sleep monitor for more detailed analysis and scoring. REM sleep is a state in which brain waves are occurring despite a deep sleep state, and it is said that many people are dreaming.
▲ PAI, which can maintain a healthy state by giving an appropriate load to cardiopulmonary function and training, records and reflects the training state throughout the week. It will show you how much exercise you need right now, but it's quite tough.

So far, the language of the Mi Band itself has depended on the language display on the smartphone side. However, from Mi Band 5, you can select Chinese (Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese) and English from the main body. Previously, when purchasing the Chinese mainland version, it was only possible to use simplified characters in the Japanese environment, but now that it is possible to display in English, the usability has improved dramatically.

▲ It's plain, but the nice feature is the language display switching function. You can switch from the Mi Fit side.

The connection between Mi Band 5 and smartphone is Bluetooth 5.0 LE. Compatible with smartphones with iOS 10.0 or later and Android 5.0 or later. Unfortunately, the Chinese version currently on sale has not been approved for technical use, but it is rumored that it will be supported in the global version scheduled for July. Xiaomi has a Japanese subsidiary, so we can expect to release the Japanese version.

If the model with NFC is installed, the function will be enhanced, but…

A model with NFC built-in specifications is also available separately for Mi Band. By registering public transport cards such as buses and trains, security gate keys, and credit (David) cards in advance, various services can be used via Mi Band. However, until now, it was limited to use in China, and since there were no particular changes this time, unfortunately there seems to be no one that can be used in Japan. In China, an update will come in August, so I'd like to see the situation right now.

▲The official website informs that the range of NFC usage has spread, but it is all within the Chinese mainland. There is little hope of being able to use it outside of China, but once it becomes available, it is a pretty interesting feature.
▲ Comparison of Mi Band 5 and Mi Band 4 specifications.

In addition, it is "Xiao AI" installed from Mi Band 4, but if it is a model with NFC built-in microphone, you can activate the assistant by voice and perform various operations. Also, start and end weather information and workouts from the connected smartphone. It also supports setting and operation of Xiaomi IoT home appliances. However, input is Chinese and English only.

Other convenient functions are the audio remote control function adopted from Mi Band 4 and the shutter button function added this time. As its name suggests, the audio remote control allows you to control the music being played on your smartphone with Mi Band. The song name is also displayed in Mi Band. The shutter button is used to release the shutter of the paired smartphone, and it seems to be useful when taking a group photo or a solo shoot.

▲Audio remote control function. The screen is small, but you can operate it in the same way.
▲ The shutter button function becomes effective when the camera of the smartphone is activated.

Although Mi Band sells simplicity, it has evolved as a full-fledged wearable tool that you can not imagine from the price. If you want to easily monitor your health condition, this device is recommended with confidence.

▲A collaborative model will be released every time, but this time a pack with the image of "SpongeBob Square Pants", "Neon Genesis Evangelion", "Detective Conan" and "Hatsune Miku" will be released.

The Mi Band 5 used in this review was used after reporting to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, "Establishment of a special system such as experiments using non-technically acquired equipment (Radio Law, Article 4-2, Paragraph 2)". I am.

This wireless equipment has not been confirmed to comply with the technical standards stipulated by the Radio Law, and can only be used under special conditions stipulated by the law. Use of wireless equipment in violation of this condition is subject to penalties and other measures stipulated by law.
